Layer masks control which areas of the image the adjustment is applied to so you can target your changes. This provides flexibility and helps improve the quality of the final result. As you may already know layers allow you to see the impact of an adjustment on an image without actually applying the adjustment. Equally important, but often overlooked is the layer mask.
